President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for a more inclusive and equitable global governance framework at the United Nations.
To do this, the President suggested modifications to the United Nations Security Council.
Speaking at the United Nations Summit on the Future of the World on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, President Akufo-Addo underlined that the Security Council, in its current structure, is an obsolete organisation that no longer reflects modern-day reality.
He said that genuine multilateralism cannot thrive while international governance systems remain steeped in inequality.
“In its current form, the [Security] Council does not reflect the realities of today’s world. It remains an outdated post-Second World War relic, with Africa, a continent of 1.4 billion people, grossly underrepresented,” President Akufo-Addo noted.
“We cannot speak of multilateralism when the structures of global governance are rooted in an unjust and unequal order. Mr. President, the time for half-measures is over. Bold reforms are needed to ensure that every nation, large or small, rich or poor, has an equal voice at the table,” he stated.
He further posited that African countries need equal opportunities to drive growth, stressing that handouts from the West are unnecessary.
He said Africans demand opportunities in the new global framework to have access to education, health care, and jobs.
“Africa in particular, knows the cost of being left out. Yes, we are a continent rich in potential and resilient in the face of adversity. We have also been disadvantaged by the global system that has generally treated us as an afterthought. We have been viewed merely as passive recipients of aid rather than as equal partners in global progress.
“Many promises have not been fulfilled to bring about the long-chain assistance that we passionately need. Such aid offered often comes with strings attached, limiting our ability to shape our future. Africa is not a continent of despair, she’s focused on full of great possibilities. She’s required, however, to chart a new course of development.
“The people of Africa are not asking for handouts, they are demanding opportunities in the new global architecture so that they can have access to education, health care and jobs to be able to build better lives for themselves, families and their descendants.”
