A group affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Patriot Ghana, has taken a swipe at President Akufo-Addo, accusing him of failing the fight against illegal mining known as galamsey.
Kwesi Korang, founder and leader of the group, pointed out that the President’s inability to combat the issue represents a major shortcoming, particularly since he had staked his presidency on resolving it.
Mr. Korang indicated that he blames the President because several reports on persons, including his appointees, friends, and family involved in the illegal activity, have been buried without any action taken.
He referenced Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s report, which identified several appointees and relatives of the President, to support his argument.
He said what was rather done was to discredit the renowned heart surgeon over his reports and identification of all the powerful personalities behind the national canker.
Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said the galamsey menace is a national threat that must be addressed without any political colouration.
He argued that the President has demonstrated that he is not committed in the fight against galamsey.
”President Akufo-Addo put his presidency on the line to fight, but we can agree that he has failed woefully in addressing it; indeed, his failure is so severe that it seems there’s nothing he can do about it.”
‘’We were in this country when the integrity of Prof. Frimpong-Boateng was attacked and dragged in the mud due to his resolve to fight the canker. In going into the elections this year, one major failure of this government is that teachers, doctors, professionals, labour, and every single civil servant have threatened to lay down their tools if the issue is not addressed. Galamsey is threatening our objective to win the elections. Whatever we can do as Ghanaians to collectively deal with galamsey must be done because President Akufo-Addo is unwilling to deal with galamsey as a president. He is unprepared to deal with it. Since he put his presidency on the line, there have been reports on galamsey involving his friends, family members, appointees, and party members sent to him, but he has refused to deal with it,’’ he claimed.
‘’Frimpong-Boateng told the President about the involvement of the late Sir John in Galamsey, but the President asked him to leave that to him to deal with, and he never did. Frimpong-Boateng again told the President that Gabby Otchere Darko was interfering with his work against Galamsey, but the President refused to do anything about it. So till date, if the President has refused to address the issue and we have an MP also telling us that they will stop galamsey today or in the foreseeable future, it affirms that Nana Addo Dankwa Aku-Addo is not prepared to deal with galamsey. So as a party with three months to end his tenure, we have to demonstrate to Ghanaians that we are opposed to galamsey and what Mr. Ayew Afriyie said otherwise Ghanaians will punish in the upcoming elections,’’ he added.
