Electoral Commissioner Madam Jean Mensa has maintained that the Electoral Commission (EC) believes that trust is built on transparency, the sharing of information, the body’s responsiveness, and providing the citizenry with facts, information, and evidence on issues relating to all electoral processes.
She touted that EC has demonstrated that it has been transparent, responsive, has not hidden any information, and most importantly, has been responsive in addressing issues of citizens in a timely manner and providing them with evidence and facts.
The Commissioner in her closing remarks at the first ever televised Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting on issues surrounding the credibility of the register assured Ghanaians that the EC has a robust system to organise free, fair, transparent electoral processes including the voters’ register.
Madam Jean Mensa told the political parties and other invited participants that the EC has been transparent throughout registration exercise and declaration; the EC has opened up its processes to the people, making it the only Commission to have done that.
She said the EC has provided the citizenry with daily infographics for the registration exercise since 2020 and daily information on the number of people who have been registered.
The Chair admitted that ‘’in the conduct of our affairs, we may make mistakes, and we have made some errors that do not go to the heart and do not affect the credibility of the registration and, for that matter, the election. They are minor errors, and that is not to say that we gloss over them. But the good news is that we have been very responsive. We’ve come out very quickly, we’ve issued statements, we’ve made corrections, and we have moved on. We have not hidden the truth, or we have not remained quiet. We have addressed the issues and informed the public that yes, some errors have been made and heard are the corrections. We have provided this in a timely and accurate manner, and so for us, this is the trust that we speak about’’.
She affirmed that the EC does not have anything to hide and has opened to the media all its activities, contrary to allegations of a lack of transparency and accountability.
‘’This is the best we can do, and we hope that we can improve upon it,’’ she added.
