A public health officer, Mrs. Gifty Akomanyi Amihere, has indicated the monkey pox disease is a serious public health issue that should not be taken lightly.
The monkeypox, which is also known as Mpox is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus.
She explained that the virus can be transmitted through close contact with someone who has mpox, with contaminated materials, or with infected animals.
Mpox, she noted, is an infectious disease that can cause a painful rash, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, headache, muscle ache, back pain, and low energy.
The incubation period, she said, could take a minimum of ten days and four weeks.
The health professional noted that the disease is deadly, especially for those with a weak immune system.
“Some individuals are able to recover while others get seriously sick. There are those who are to fight the disease because they have a strong immune system. Others are also unable to fight it and, through that, die. It has a case fatality rate. The case fatality rate is 3.7 percent. That means when ten people get the virus, three of them may end up dead, she said while speaking in an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
Contaminated objects, including clothing and linen, pose a risk of mpox transmission, with symptoms generally developing within a week, although onset can range from 1-21 days post-exposure and lasting 2-4 weeks, or potentially longer in individuals with compromised immune systems,” she added.
