Ghana must forget qualifying for the 2025 AFCON; it is over for us—Former GFA Veep

October 17, 2024

Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), George Afriyie, has asserted that Ghana’s quest to qualify for the 2025 Morocco African Cup of Nations is over.

Mr. Afriyie is of the view that the senior national team, the Black Stars of Ghana, should forget about qualifying for the games.

He indicated that the fallout from the Sudan game has rendered our desire to qualify for the games useless.

“Moving forward, AFCON 2025 in Morroco, let’s kick it out. We are out completely.”

He posited that Ghana needed to have won the two games against Sudan to increase its chances of qualifying for the AFCON.

Ghana currently sits third in Group F with two points from four games and is on the verge of missing out on the AFCON for the first time in 20 years.
The Black Stars will return in November to play the final two qualifiers against Niger and Angola.

He also rejected calls to fire the coach, saying he needed more time to transform the team.

“I am not one of those who will say we must fire Otto. We must maintain our faith in him and ensure that he continues the process that he has begun, because the World Cup qualifiers are still ahead of us.

“We must give him the necessary support. In these AFCON qualifiers, let us accept that we may not make any decisions and allow Otto to make his own and learn on the job as we look ahead,” he added.
