Political analyst Alex Emmanuel Nti says in order to maintain constitutional order, each branch of government must operate within its defined parameters and refrain from interfering with the responsibilities of others.
Commenting on the Supreme Court’s directive to stay the Speaker’s decision to declare four seats vacant, he stated that each branch of government has its own responsibilities, emphasising that “the Supreme Court can only be called upon when there is confusion over constitutional matters, hence the need for them to intervene. They don’t just make declarations. They have no further powers over anyone. They can only be called upon to determine constitutional questions and whether the laws had been misapplied.’’
In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he called on each of the three arms of government to stop meddling in the affairs of the other.
‘’For the sake of constitutional order, each branch of government must operate within its defined parameters and avoid encroaching on the responsibilities of others. Had this principle been upheld, the current parliamentary stalemate would not have occurred. The Supreme Court case aimed at restraining the Speaker from executing parliamentary duties warrants scrutiny. What specific actions is Afenyo-Markin attempting to prevent the Speaker from undertaking? Is this an instance of manufacturing controversy? It is crucial to recognize that, as per Article 95 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court lacks jurisdiction over this matter, which is exclusively within the High Court’s domain concerning seat vacancies. This represents a flagrant abuse of the Constitution driven by self-interest. The appropriate course of action would have been to initially file the case in the High Court, followed by potential appeals to the Appeals Court and, ultimately, the Supreme Court.’’
Alex Emmanuel Nti further advised parliamentarians and political leaders to prioritise the national interest and the people they serve over personal interests.
According to the expert, we have seen a lack of commitment from our political leaders on national interest issues throughout the years.
In response to the continuing controversies in parliament, he stated that it was past time for our politicians to demonstrate a dedication to serving the people rather than their own selfish, parochial, and partisan agendas.
According to Mr. Emmanuel Nti, the opportunity to represent constituents in parliament must be accompanied by significant responsibility.
He noted that, while elected MPs may enter the House on the platform of political parties or as independent candidates, they become Members of Parliament and represent the people rather than a political party or an independent individual.
The constitution places a great responsibility on the MPs, and so they must serve the people and avoid their own personal interests.
The brouhaha he said is needless because it has halted the activities of the House, which will have a negative impact on the entire national agenda.
