Bawku: Travellers ambushed by gunmen, leaving eight dead

An attack by gun-wielding men has led to the deaths of eight travellers on the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway.

The unfortunate incident occurred near Gbimsi, a community close to Walewale, after the gunmen blocked the highway and opened fire.

Details available revealed that the armed men set up roadblocks in both Gbimsi and Walewale Town, stopping vehicles to identify potential targets on Sunday, October 27, 2024.

The passengers were reportedly interrogated over their identities, following which eight people were killed.

Two vehicles were also set ablaze.
The Ghana Police Service has reacted to the incident, saying it has increased security in the affected areas.

The Ghana Police Service disclosed that they are working to bring the security situation in Bawku, its surrounding areas, and along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway under control.

It also revealed that there is currently a joint police and military deployment along the Bolgatanga-Walewale-Tamale highway to ensure security and manage vehicular traffic.

“The security agencies would like to once again assure the public that we are committed to maintaining peace, security, law, and order in Bawku and its environs.”
