Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has stated unequivocally that the legislature is an important branch of government that should not be taken for granted.
He stated that Parliament serves as a mirror of Ghana’s democracy and should be respected.
He said this on Tuesday, 29 October 2024, during the commissioning of the Job 600 building in Accra.
“If the people are to benefit from democratic governance, it is the Parliament – which is the mirror of democracy that is the focus – that should be strengthened. Because, apart from law making it, is parliament that has the only function of oversight, and it is parliament that should ensure that our collective efforts in terms of energy, in terms of resources, in terms of trust, is appropriately applied to the benefit of everyone,” he said.
He asserted that Parliament embodies the principles of representation, accountability, and governance, reflecting the people’s voice and holding the government accountable to the public.
“So strengthening Parliament is not just the duty of Parliament, but of everybody and we have to work together to make sure that our people don’t suffer and struggle to elect us in vain.”
In the meantime, the Speaker has called on Ghanaians to support and honour the institution’s contribution to the country’s democratic structure and to strengthen Parliament across the board.
He also emphasised the necessity of proper infrastructure for Parliament to carry out its duties.
He conveyed his appreciation for the new office complex’s completion, calling it a major turning point that would give MPs the atmosphere and tools they need to perform their jobs more effectively.
“Apart from law-making, it is parliament that has the only function of oversight and it is parliament that has to ensure that our collective efforts, whether in terms of energy, resources, or trust, are properly applied to the benefit of everybody.
“So, strengthening the parliament is not just the duty of the parliament but of everybody. We have to work together and make sure that our people do not suffer and struggle to elect us in vain,” he stated.
