Mrs. Louisa Odai, a senior nurse at the Trust Hospital, has urged philanthropists, individuals, organisations, and Members of Parliament to assist impoverished women who require mammogram and ultrasound services following breast screening activities.
According to her, some women have had their breasts screened but cannot afford mammograms or ultrasounds.
She made an appeal during a free breast screening event hosted by Rainbow Radio in collaboration with the Trust Hospital on Friday, October 25, 2024.
”A lot of women wanted to be screened, but the challenge we discovered was that even though they were eager to be screened, when we asked them to do the mammograms and ultrasound scan, you could see that there was a challenge… I’d like to take advantage of this opportunity to urge our stakeholders, parliamentarians, and philanthropists to support women in general. You can work with the hospital or Rainbow Radio to ensure that when we find the lumps and those who need mammograms or ultrasounds, there is money set aside for them to get them done.
Mrs. Louisa Odai, a member of the awareness team, stated that the breast screening exercise assisted them in screening over 170 women, which she described as impressive, adding that the outcome is positive because most of the time when health specialists visit communities, people are hesitant to come out and screen for fear of finding an unpleasant result.
She also encouraged women to take advantage of the free screenings being held in various health facilities as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
‘’The outcome of the screening was good; it was impressive. It was impressive because when we go to communities, people are really willing to come and screen for that they would find out something. But like we always educate, even if we find out something, there is promise and light at the end of the tunnel.
“Most facilities are offering this free screening; please take advantage of it and have your breasts screened; even if they find something, there is always room for improvement and treatment.
“And the fact that they find out something in your breast is not the end of the world and it doesn’t mean you have breast cancer, it could be other breast issue and not breast Cancer” .
