President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has signed the Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act of 2024 into law.
Parliament enacted the Shippers Act in July 2024, and the president gave his assent on October 18, 2024.
This expands the Ghana Shippers’ jurisdiction’s (GSA) regulatory jurisdiction over sea, air, and land transportation, with the goal of creating a balanced and competitive commercial shipping scene in Ghana.
In a statement made on October 31, 2024, the Authority declared that it is now better positioned to promote price transparency, maintain service quality, and develop Ghana as a major international commerce destination.
“Ghana’s shipping industry stands to gain from this fortified oversight, which safeguards transparency in pricing and fairness in service delivery, establishing Ghana as a destination of choice for international trade.”
The Authority has launched a nationwide sensitisation campaign, educating stakeholders about their rights and responsibilities under the Act.
The move forms part of its efforts to ensure the smooth implementation of the new law.
The Authority extended its gratitude to all stakeholders whose invaluable input shaped this legislative milestone.
“Together, we have laid a foundation for a resilient, sustainable, and competitive commercial shipping ecosystem that will benefit all parties involved in the shipping, logistics, and broader trade sectors,” it said.
