Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has declared that all registered National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) beneficiaries will receive free dialysis beginning December 1, 2024.
The governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate made the announcement while campaigning in the Old Tafo constituency on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
The implementation of free dialysis for NHIS card holders, he observed, follows a successful pilot program that provided free renal dialysis to patients aged 60 and over, as well as those under the age of 18.
“A significant number of people are afflicted with kidney diseases that require costly dialysis treatments. To address this, we introduced a pilot programme six months ago to incorporate dialysis into the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
This initiative has provided free dialysis to individuals over 60 and under 18 for the past six months. Upon completion of the pilot, we will be extending free NHIS coverage to all dialysis patients, effective December 1, 2024.”
