The minority leader of the 8th Parliament, Ato Forson, has stated that posterity will vindicate the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for warning the NPP government about the consequences of excessive borrowing, which was ignored.
He added that Ghanaians, particularly future generations, will condemn the leadership of the outgoing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their shortcomings while in office.
Speaking at the dissolution of the eighth parliament on January 6, 2025, he said, “I believe that posterity will surely vindicate our warnings regarding the reckless borrowing and economic mismanagement under the Akufo-Addo and Alhaji Bawumia administration.”.
He alleged that records made accessible to the chamber revealed that some NPP members have benefitted greatly from large quantities of money, including transaction advisory fees, while the country is still struggling with a crippling national debt.
“Some individuals in government benefitted to the tune of $159.3 million in transaction advisory fees, while the country was saddled with an unsustainable public debt.”
He stated that the NDC raised red flags over how the Bank of Ghana was mismanaged, which led to the significant negative equity losses for the nation.
“As a result, the Bank of Ghana became policy insolvent by the end of 2023,” he said, adding that the bank also printed illegal money to finance government expenditure, contributing to the country’s inflation crisis.
