The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for his pledge to uncap the budget for the authority.
In a statement issued by the Corporate Affairs Directorate, the NHIA stated that the announcement marks a significant turning point in the scheme’s history.
The statement said by removing the budgetary cap, the government has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and ensuring sustainable funding for the National Insurance Scheme.
”This bold move will significantly impact the scheme’s growth and aspiration to attain Universal health coverage. It will enable the NHIA to expand coverage, settle claims promptly, improve service delivery, and ensure that every Ghanaian has access to quality and affordable healthcare regardless of socio-economic status.
The NHIA stands ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to maximise the benefits of this critical intervention for the collective good of our nation.’’

Background
President John Dramani Mahama has hinted at plans to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) levy in the next budget.
This, he explained, is to enhance healthcare access for all Ghanaians.
He disclosed this while speaking at the National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service held at the Ohene Konadu Auditorium, University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), on January 12, 2025.
According to him, he remains committed to making healthcare accessible and equitable.
The President asserted that uncapping the NHIS levy will equip the National Health Insurance Authority with sufficient funds to reimburse healthcare providers for the services they render.
“We will prioritise healthcare and ensure that every Ghanaian, no matter their location or economic status, has access to quality medical care,” he stated. “In this regard, we will compile an inventory of all uncompleted health facilities and prepare a plan and program to complete and operationalise these.”
“This is important so that the National Health Insurance Authority can have sufficient funds to reimburse health service providers for the care that they provide to the public,” he added.
