President John Dramani Mahama has expressed worry about what he described as the escalating terrorism in neighbouring countries.
The Ghanaian leader lamented that the existence of extremist groups in the region poses a threat.
He therefore proposed the need for stronger regional cooperation in dealing with these challenges.
He made the remarks in a meeting with Mali’s Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maiga.
He told the Malian leader that Ghana would continue to support Mali and other countries in their efforts to combat terrorism and restore stability.
“We recognise the relationship we have and how we must work closely together. We know what is happening in the geopolitics of our sub-region and the unfortunate situation unfolding in the Sahel. It is not anything that is new, but it continues to become more grave than it was in the past. I’m talking about the issue of insurgency and terrorism.”
“And so, our security is an echelon objective, and we must work with each other to make sure that our sub-region is safe. Ghana continues to remain strong in solidarity with Mali.”
He further announced that Ghana and Mali would form joint technical teams to address challenges in their bilateral relations.
According to Mr. Mahama, the joint team will work on identifying and resolving existing issues.
On his part, Mali’s Prime Minister, Abdoulaye Maiga, pledged his country’s commitment to strengthening its bilateral relations with Ghana.
He said the two countries would collaborate on economic and security issues.
“We’re convinced that our two leaders have the way to ensure cooperation, economic matters, and security.”
