Convenor of Election Watch Ghana Mark Ewusi Arkoh has defended the appointment of Anthony Sarpong as the Acting Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), describing it as appropriate.
He argued that the appointee is more than qualified and possesses the needed skills in managing the affairs of the GRA.
He has therefore advised those opposed to his appointment on grounds of not being a party member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to desist from their needless attacks.
Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that Mr. Sarpong is a qualified professional who must be allowed to serve his country.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong,’We need people with experience and the expertise to lead our state institutions. We need people who have the skills, the competencies, and who are knowledgeable to help us build this country, and that is why I, Mark Ewusi Arkoh, support the appointment of Anthony Sarpong as Commissioner-General for the Ghana Revenue Authority. He will bring a lot of changes to the GRA. The country will benefit from his expertise.
Some young persons in the NDC have asked President John Dramani Mahama to revoke the appointment of Mr. Sarpong, claiming it is inappropriate and that he is not a member of the party.
The group has threatened to embark on a protest should the president not heed their call for a reappointment to the GRA.
However, Mark Ewusi Arkoh believes we should look beyond partisan lines and instead consider the appointee’s expertise, experience, and skill set.
He declared,”I am so much excited that he was appointed. We need people who are competent to manage our state institutions. If we get the likes of Anthony Sarpong appointed as ministers, I am telling you on authority that Ghana will change. He solves problems and is not lazy. He is a great personality with a strong skill set to manage the GRA, and so I will stress the need for the party supporters to allow him to work”.
He revealed that KPMG is disappointed that Anthony Sarpong is leaving because he is a key contributor to the company’s success.
‘He is one of the reasons for KPMG’s transformation. He has made significant contributions to the success of KPMG. He has accomplished a lot and received numerous recognitions and awards. The president appointed him based on his expertise and experience. While we are considering political appointees and party members for certain positions, there are some specific positions and areas that require skilled and competent individuals to handle. Must it always be party members appointed to serve the country?
