Kidney specialists and surgeons in the Ashanti Region have successfully performed the first-ever kidney transplant.
The successful transplant has been described as a positive achievement in the medical space, especially for those with kidney-related problems.
The transplant was carried out at the Kidney Specialist Centre in collaboration with the HopeXchange Medical Centre in Kumasi.
The patient is a man in his forties who had battled kidney problems for half a decade.
Dr. Elliot Koranteng Tannor, a consultant nephrologist and lead specialist for the surgery, speaking to journalists, disclosed that the procedure cost approximately $25,000.
It is, however, estimated that any other transplant will cost between $30,000 and $35,000.
She assured the Ghanaian public that this was something positive for patients and that they are hopeful it will continue.
“This is something we are hoping will continue, and it is something that has come to stay here in Kumasi,” he added.
