Minister-designate for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says Ghana feels disappointed in the decision by the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement.
He described the US as a key contributor to the Paris Agreement and has therefore appealed that they reconsider their decision.
This was in response to a question he was asked when he appeared before the Appointments Committee on Friday, January 31, 2025.
The North Tongu Member of Parliament said,’Let me register our unhappiness at the latest withdrawal by the United States of America from the Paris Climate Accord. That was a very key intervention in the climate change agenda. Ghana played a leading role; I recall under President Mahama when he was President at the time,’’ he said, stressing the US withdrawal has clearly created a disruption, but we will continue to urge our big brothers and sisters to come back to the climate change agreement and to commit to a new global order when it comes to climate issues’’.
Background
President Trump has withdrawn the United States from the Paris climate agreement.
The objective of the agreement is to restrict long-term global warming to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5 degrees Celsius) above pre-industrial levels, or, at minimum, maintain temperatures below 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius) above pre-industrial levels.
The US President signed the executive order withdrawing from the agreement while addressing supporters who had gathered at the Capital One Arena in Washington.
“I’m immediately withdrawing from the unfair, one-sided Paris climate accord rip-off,” he said before signing the order.
“The United States will not sabotage our own industries while China pollutes with impunity,” Trump said.
The United States must formally notify United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres of its withdrawal, which, according to the rules of the agreement, will take effect one year later.
This is the second time the United States has withdrawn from the deal.
The first was witnessed during his first time in office. It was, however, reversed by the Biden administration in 2021.
