Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has lifted the two-week suspension he placed on some four Members of Parliament.
The Speaker lifted the suspension today, Tuesday, February 4, 2025, during proceedings.
According to him, the decision to lift the suspension takes immediate effect.
He first justified his action, stating that the standing orders of parliament granted him the powers to suspend the MPs contrary to opinions held by some lawyers and individuals.
Speaker Bagbin also commended the suspended for not attending to the House in compliance with the order he gave last week.
He praised the marshals and police for also enforcing his order.
“They demonstrated and assured me of their total support to me and the deputy speakers to ensure that we have an efficient and an effective function in parliament in Ghana. So I am satisfied with not just the statement, but also their conduct.
“And I will proceed to lift the suspension of the four members of parliament that I considered were involved in this disorderly conduct which amounted to contempt.”
Four MPs were suspended on Friday, January 31, following a chaotic incident that led to the destruction of tables and microphones.
The suspended lawmakers were Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor (South Dayi), Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam-Adoagyiri), Alhassan Tampuli (Gushegu), and Jerry Ahmed Shaib (Weija-Gbawe).
On that day, the Speaker strongly condemned the MPs’ actions, calling them “disgraceful and deeply regrettable.”
He stated that parliamentary privilege does not cover disorderly conduct, and that such actions are “rapidly eroding public confidence” in the House.
