Uncle Ato, a gospel musician, has revealed that he has only received royalty payments from the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) once in his professional career.
The worshipper and ordained man of God stated that he received the royalties several years ago, which were either Ghc12 or Ghc120.
Uncle Ato disclosed this in an interview with Sokoohemaa Kukua on the midmorning show on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
He told the host that he has personally not really made any more attempts to go to GHAMRO for an update, especially when the amount received by other colleague musicians was nothing to write home about.
‘’I remember I had received royalty once in my career as a musician. I don’t know if it would be either Ghc12 or Ghc120 now. I have received it just once to date. Probably I don’t follow up, and so I don’t know if I still have my royalties with GHAMRO. But what I have also observed and heard is that what my colleague musicians received was nothing to write home about, and so I have not really followed up, but I will do so now.
Responding to the impact of digital technology on music, he opined that it has been a 50-50 benefit because it comes with its own challenges.
He complained about digital piracy, which he lamented has deprived musicians and original composers of their rights as pirates use their compositions without permission.
”Digital technology has been beneficial, but it also poses its own set of challenges. Digital piracy is an issue that deprives musicians of their benefits. What I can say is that it is a 50/50 benefit. It has advantages and disadvantages, but if you can transition to the digital space, you will reap the benefits,” he told the host.”
