Broadcast journalist and disc jockey, Papa Taste, has made a passionate appeal to President John Dramani Mahama through the health minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh to rescind his decision to scrap the Covid-19 levy.
The renowned DJ wants the government to rather redirect the use of the levy in the fight against malaria.
He made the appeal when he sat in for the host of the midmorning show on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
He bemoaned the threat of malaria and its negative impact on human life, claiming that malaria threatens humans and kills more than Covid-19 necessitates that the government retain the leevy but redirect its use towards malaria prevention.
The debate over abolishing some taxes has always revolved around the betting tax and the E-levy, but the Covid-19 levy has received little attention because we have grown accustomed to paying it. So I’m asking the President to reconsider scrapping the Covid-19 levy. The Covid-19 outbreak did, in fact, claim the lives of some people. However, the negative impact of Covid-19 is not as severe as malaria, particularly in children. My point is that if we’re talking about the Covid-19 levy and you look at how malaria is threatening human life, why don’t we change the name of the levy and redirect the funds to malaria prevention?
This is a humble appeal to the President through his Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. Please, honourable Health Minister, inform the President of my appeal. Please allow his government to consider this appeal. I will not make any comments about the E-Levy or the betting tax; my focus is on the Covid-19 levy.”
He emphasised that if we take this approach, we can generate some revenue and invest it in the fight against malaria, which will benefit our children in particular. Most importantly, this is a humble appeal made to the President by the Health Minister.
