Former defender of the Black Stars of Ghana, Habib Mohammed, has admonished Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to engage with retired footballers as part of efforts aimed at transforming football in the country.
He claimed the retired footballers have the skills, knowledge, and technical ability to help him transform our game, which is currently facing challenges.
The former Kotoko defender said President John Dramani Mahama himself has acknowledged the challenges confronting our games and committed to dealing with them.
To achieve this, he has proposed to the minister to engage the retired footballers since they have a lot of proposals to offer in improving football across all levels.
”The minister should meet with former players to brainstorm ideas and implement measures to help transform our games. The former players still have the knowledge and skills to help change Ghana the face of football. He should not hesitate to take this bold step,” he said in an interview with Rainbow Sports.
Habib Mohammed also advised the minister to focus on the security provided during our games, stating that there are gaps in security during football matches.
‘Security during our games is critical, and he must prioritise that. If you ask me, I’ll ask him to make that his top priority. We face a challenge, and if we do not address it, we will continue to witness acts of violence during matches.”
To those who have questioned the Minister’s competence on the grounds that he is not a sportsperson and thus will struggle, he responded, ”that is unnecessary. It doesn’t matter. The fact that he is not a professional does not imply that he lacks skills and knowledge in our field. If he only listens and consults with stakeholders, he will succeed in his ministry. He is not the only sports minister appointed, and he is not particularly sports-related. The most important thing is that he consult widely, and he will succeed in the Ministry”.
