Former Hearts of Oak player Yaw Amankwaa Mireku has challenged his former team and its rival, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, to look beyond the request it has jointly made to the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
The retired footballer averred that as two giants of the Ghana Premier League, they have to consider initiatives that can help revive the league.
He opined that the local league was no longer attractive, and as two big teams, they have a responsibility to brainstorm on ways to make their league better.
Following the unfortunate death of famous Kotoko supporter “Nana Pooley” and hooliganism in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), the two clubs jointly wrote to the GFA, making some demands as part of efforts aimed at ensuring security and safety at match venues.
Among other requests, the two teams proposed that the league should become autonomous and be managed independently.
They also urged the GFA to seek exemptions from Value Added Tax (VAT) and other deductions on match proceeds.
Reacting to these demands, the former player advised the two teams to also focus on contributing to ways that will improve the local league, which has declined over the years.
Speaking with Rainbow Sports, he stated, “As these two are pushing for automatic placement, they should consider ways to revive the local league.” Their league has unfortunately declined, so they must find ways to perform better than they are doing now. They should look for ways to revive the game and restore the rivalry that drew football fans to our stadiums in droves to watch games.
While making these demands, they should keep in mind that we need to help the league transform. It is unfortunate that the local league has fallen, but the two teams should not only be concerned with positions but also with ensuring that they come together as the two largest teams in Ghana to revive Ghana football, as our football is dead and gone.”
