The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) Public Relations Officer (PRO) has ruled out any partisan political motivation in the organization’s declaration of a statewide strike in response to the mass revocation of nurse and midwife recruitment.
Mr. Joseph Krampah said the directive for the newly recruited nurses to be sent home was unfortunate.
He posited that asking them to go home will increase the workload on the already pressured nurses and midwives.
The recruitment of these nurses, he stated, came as a relief to them, but the position taken by the ruling government was a bad one.
“We are not politicians, and should not be treated as such. We can’t be employed and fired like political appointees. We provide crucial services, and any attempt to destabilise our front will result in us going on strike and returning home. We feel that the government can keep the nurses and midwives on the job while conducting an investigation. If they don’t want us to strike, they should immediately withdraw the letter rescinding the decision.”
He said they took a decision to strike because the Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and the Health Minister, Mintah Akandoh, have both confirmed that the nurses and midwives are part of all civil servants asked to go due to the alte recruitment by the previous government.
“They have accused our President of using the GRNMA to engage in politics all because she is married to an NPP man who is a constituency Chairman. This is not a political issue. We are not politicians and so cannot be influenced by anyone. Whatever we do is about the welfare of Ghanaians and not allowing politics to influence our decision. So we want to stress that the directive should be revoked, or we will strike and go home along with those who have been asked to go home.”
