Kit Yawson, Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in the United Kingdom and Ireland, has stated that the collapse of GN Bank by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) is a political agenda that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) must correct.
He revealed that as the person in charge of encouraging Ghanaians in the UK to open bank accounts with the bank, he had received several calls from people whose funds had been frozen.
He said that the founder, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, had a brilliant idea for establishing the bank, which is why the NPP plotted to destroy it and silence him. ”I told him that the NPP would stop and silence him. I was aware of that plot and informed him of it”.
Kit Yawson lamented that the government of former President Akufo-Addo refused to pay him the debt owed him, which exacerbated his financial problems.
He said, ”Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, knowing that the Ghana government was unable to finance public projects such as roads and bridges, granted loans to contractors through GN Bank. Millions of Ghana cedis: these contractors did an excellent job, the government certified the projects, and the Ghana government refused to repay his money. Until now, they have not paid the money”.
Kit Yawson was interviewed by Sir Richie for ‘As It Is Ghana’ on Rainbow Radio 92.4FM in the United Kingdom.
He said that President John Dramani publicly condemned the collapse of GN Bank and promised to restore the bank’s licence.
”President Mahama stated publicly that all those who lost their jobs as a result of the banking sector cleanup should not have lost them, and that his government will ensure that Nduom’s bank is reopened. It is good for us, and that is what we aspire to. Nduom recently went to see President Mahama in his office, and the signs are positive. “President Mahama has assured us that Nduom’s licenses will be restored,” he said.
Kit Yawson emphasised that “Akufo-Addo and co realised that Nduom was gaining popularity and so they made efforts to destroy him in order not to jeopardise their chances in the 2020 elections. The only thing the NPP could not do to Nduom was to execute him or imprison him because he is not a thief, but they destroyed his businesses for political reasons.”
