Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, Isaac Agongo, has raised concerns over the current state of our stadiums.
The lawmaker says what we refer to as stadiums across the country are now death traps.
He claimed that these facilities are not fit for purpose, and that efforts must be made to address the issue.
Mr. Adongo noted that we have no business playing football in these stadiums.
He was contributing to a debate on the floor of parliament when the issue of hooliganism came up for discussion.
The MP was also sad following the circumstances that led to the death of Kotoko fan ‘Pooley,’ who was stabbed during a match between the Kotoko team and Nsoatreman FC.
Some have alleged that at the time of the incident, access to first aid and ana ambulance became difficult.
To him, such an unfortunate incident should never occur again, stressing, “We have no business playing football in such a field. That is a death trap. When we go there to play and nothing happens, we will think it is a football field, no”?
He, among other things, raised questions over the presence of security personnel and how the young man was stabbed to death when it was required to have security officials deployed to the mact venue.
Isaac Adongo appealed to the Speaker to direct the Ministry of Sports to take this matter seriously and that if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) cannot follow rigorous protocols for licensing our football stadia, we should not be playing football in this country.
He stressed that football is a serious business, and it is about lives.
“Mr. Speaker, I would like to call on this house to take on the GFA to properly make sure that before football returns we are prepared in all respects and that our football fields are fit for purpose. Currently, what we call football fields are just parks.”
