Ghanaian Paralympian Botsyo Nkegbe has called for the prosecution of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) who supervised the reconstructed the Accra Sports Stadium in 2008 on grounds of removing the track.
Speaking to Rainbow Sports, he complained bitterly against those who were in charge of the renovation of the facility for the CAN 2008.
He told the sports team that during the reconstruction, those involved removed the track from the stadium, depriving athletes of a facility to train.
Nkegbe appealed to the newly appointed Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to prioritise this.According to him, if there is any opportunity for any renovation to be done, the facility is designed to meet the needs of all sporting disciplines.
”I have consistently stated that the Local Organising Committee in charge of organising CAN 2008 and removing the track from the Accra Sports Stadium must be arrested and prosecuted, because if you met a stadium with a track and embarked on renovation, how do you take the track out of the stadium? This was one of the reasons athletics had diminished in the country. The Accra Sports Stadium was the centre for athletes. If there should be an opportunity for renovation, they should bring back the track to the Accra Sports Stadium.”
He went on to admonish the minister to make his office more accessible to sports persons who are living with disabilities.‘’His office must be accessible, and if possible, he should have a dedicated desk for disability sports. The accessibility I am talking about is that if I am a PWD and I am unable to access the office of the minister, then you cannot listen to my problems. If the ministry is for sports and recreation, it should be accessible for all.’’
He also requests that the minister support para sports by investing in logistics for their members to increase their participation in international and regional tournaments.
