Organiser for the Ghana Amputee League Clubs Association (GALCA), Amugi Joseph, has shockingly disclosed in an interview that the goalkeeper trainer for the national amputee team has died from a hernia.
He said the trainer died because he could not afford treatment, a situation that has demoralised the team.
Amugi Joseph told Rainbow Sports that efforts to solicit funds for the trainer failed.
He was particularly disappointed because, as someone who contributed to ensuring that the para team won gold at the 2023 African Para Games, he was not treated fairly.
He noted that the members of the team have not even been rewarded with a bottle of water.
‘’Not a single member of the para team that won gold for Ghana in 2023 has been recognised. They have not received even a bottle of water for their efforts in winning gold for the country,’’ he said.
When asked to confirm if the goalkeeper trainer of the team died from a hernia, Amugi Joseph confirmed, saying, “The goalkeeper’s trainer has died. He died recently due to his inability to treat his hernia. He did not have the resources. Someone who contributed to the team’s success at the 2023 Para Games could not afford treatment. This is disheartening and shows that the country does not recognise our efforts’’.
He appealed to Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams to intervene in having their issues resolved.
He stated that the previous government did not pay their winning bonuses, and they would like the current minister to look into the matter.
