Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Bagbin has reiterated that the legislative body will not shield any Member of Parliament from facing sanctions over their involvement in illegal mining activities.
Mr Bagbin warned any MP or MPs found culpable to be engaging in illegal mining activities popularly known as galamsey will be made to face the full rigours of the law.
He stated unequivocally that regardless of the position of an MP, if it is established that the person is involved in galamsey, that individual would be made to face the law.
The Speaker was emphatic that any Member of Parliament, regardless of their position, who is found to be complicit in destructive mining activities would be punished.
He also disclosed that there is currently a petition before him involving an MP accused of illegal mining for which he (the speaker) has initiated an investigation.
The MP he disclosed has appeared before him,’and the MP will tell you I have initiated an investigation into that petition. The member himself has appeared before me on that. We are not going to countenance that. What we’ve seen today is just a stark reminder of the consequences of such actions.
To the lawmakers, he advised them to set good examples for Ghanaians, stressing that ”any member of Parliament caught engaging in or facilitating this type of existential threat to our lives will face the full rigours of the law”.
He was addressing MPs at the Parliamentarians’ conference on restoring a culture of proper small scale mining in Ghana.
