The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists reemphasises the need for professionalism since medical laboratory practice cannot be overstated.

The professionalism of medical laboratory science is guided by several key frameworks, such as the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) Code of Ethics, and the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act (Act 857), specifically under the Allied Health Professions Council.

The 1992 Constitution of Ghana emphasises the importance of professionalism and efficiency in public service, which includes healthcare.

Furthermore, the Ghana Health Service Code of Ethics mandates healthcare professionals, including medical laboratory scientists, to maintain integrity, confidentiality, and competence in their duties.

In the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act (Act 857), the Allied Health Professions Council regulates the training, licensing, and professional conduct of medical laboratory scientists, ensuring that only qualified personnel practice within the profession. Maintaining professionalism in the field is vital for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of test results.

According to Dr. Amegatcher, adhering to standard operating procedures, implementing quality assurance measures, and updating knowledge through professional development are essential aspects of laboratory professionalism.

The association said, Laboratory professionals must continue to uphold ethical principles such as patient confidentiality, impartiality, and diligence in their work.

Professionalism also includes effective communication, teamwork, and respect for colleagues and clients.

A professional approach builds public trust in laboratory services, fosters collaboration among healthcare professionals, and contributes to improved patient outcomes.

It also ensures compliance with national and international standards, enhancing Ghana’s healthcare system’s credibility.

In conclusion, the association added that professionalism in medical laboratory science is fundamental to delivering high-quality, reliable, and ethical laboratory services.

The Public Relations Officer said,By adhering to legal and ethical frameworks, upholding best practices, and maintaining a commitment to lifelong learning, medical laboratory professionals can significantly contribute to Ghana’s healthcare system.

“As we celebrate this month of professionalism, it is imperative to reaffirm our dedication to excellence, ethical conduct, and unwavering professionalism in our service to humanity,” she stated.
