The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has noted that President John Dramani Mahama remains committed to transforming the tourism sector.
He asserted that it was about time we appreciated our culture and heritage since that can help boost our local economy.
The Ghana Month celebration, he explained, was launched to promote domestic tourism.
In an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he stated that, in line with the President’s vision to transform domestic tourism, the Black Star Experience will be a year-long event rather than just one month in March.
”We will have Ghana Food Month, where it is encouraged that for every hotel you visit, you should have access to our local delicacies, such as banku, dokuno, waakye, tatale, yakayaka, aboloo, brodie ampesie, rather than the sausages and beef we import. We also have Ghana Fashion Month, which will allow designers, seamstresses, tailors, and others to interact and sell to Ghanaians. The president has given us specific instructions to have year-round activities, not just for the celebration of our independence.”
Mr. Abeiku Santana encouraged the Ghanaian public to participate in the planned activities so that they can appreciate our heritage, culture, and diversity.
He promised that efforts are being made to redevelop our tourist sites so that they are more accessible and appealing to both domestic and international visitors.
”President Mahama has a vision to redevelop and modernise our tourist attractions in order to make them more accessible and appealing to both domestic and international tourists. We are also appealing to Ghanaians to help the government achieve this goal.”
He added that Ghanaians abroad will not be excluded from the activities and that the government will work with the Diaspora Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ghana Embassies across the globe to ensure that our citizens abroad join the celebration.
‘’The Ghana Tourism Authority will partner with the Office of the Diaspora Affairs through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and reach out to all the foreign missions and embassies abroad on how best we can encourage Ghanaians abroad to be part of the Heritage Month.’’
