Mr. Bawah Fuseini, President of Ghana Athletics, has highlighted some measures he believes, when implemented, can help Ghanaian athletes to perform better at the global level.
Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Sports, he proposed that the government ought to put athletes representing the country on a monthly allowance of $2,000 so they will concentrate only on training for the Olympics and other global competitions.
He stated that several of the athletes are discouraged because the country does not recognise their efforts.
‘’If we want to win medals, we need to solve the underlying problems. We can assure the athletes that every month, we will put them on a $2,000 monthly allowance and ask them to concentrate only on athletics and no other jobs. Their focus will be to train and use the amount to pay their rent, eat, and cover other expenses. If they fail to do this, we will make them return the money. That is the first thing we have to do.
In proposing the second suggestion, he admonished authorities to invest in the training and scouting of secondary school students who have the potential to represent the country.
He said these students can be scouted and trained when they are on vacation, so by the time they complete school, they would have gained some appreciable level of experience.
