Minority Leader of Parliament Alexander Afenyo-Markin has described the 2025 budget statement, which was presented by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, as an ‘azaa’ budget.
The Effutu Member of Parliament, speaking after the budget presentation on the floor of the House, accused the government of deceiving Ghanaians.
He opined that the minister failed to provide a clear guide on how the government intends to implement its 24-hour economy policy.
Dr. Forson told parliament that the government remains committed to executing the policy and, at the appropriate time, will submit to the House a clear guide on the policy.
But the minority leader, in his reaction, called out the government, saying it had failed to provide clear details on the policy.
He said even though they complain about the economy, it grew by 5.7 percent with a so-called reset economy projection of 4 percent.
He noted the economy they complained about left us with four months of import cover but projected a three-month cover under the reset economy.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin said the budget also failed to highlight clear ways through which the government will create the jobs it promised the unemployed youth of Ghana.
“We have witnessed what we can best describe as an Azaa budget. Their own much talked about 24-hour economy: the President came here and said it was all ready, and the Finance Minister came here and again the 24-hour economy was not included in his budget statement.
Mr. Speaker, the youth of this country have been waiting for this 24-hour economy policy. The minister tells us the policy will be brought later… It is clear that all the jobs they promised to the youth of this country were merely an azaa budget. There is no inspiration from this budget; there is no hope in this budget,” he remarked.
