The Member of Parliament for Walewale Constituency, Dr Kabiru Tiah Mahama, expressed concerns about the credibility of the NDC’s 2025 budget, citing inconsistencies and misrepresentations.
Specifically, he mentioned that the Minister for Finance misrepresented the country’s GDP, stating that central government areas accounted for 5.2% of GDP, when in fact, the budget states that infrastructure owing in the total infrastructure sector amounts to 22 billion.
The Member of Parliament commenting during the 2025 Budget Debate in Parliament said the budget shows a “Chingilingi” government with an “Obolo” budget because the Office of the President’s compensation has increased by 728%.
He also believes that this budget cannot address the underlying macroeconomic issues affecting the country.
He again mentioned that the government’s options for financing the budget are limited and that the forthcoming debt service obligations will have profound implications for fiscal sustainability and balance of payments.
The Member of Parliament for Walewale also highlighted some alarming discrepancies in the 2025 budget allocations. Specifically, he points out that the office of government machinery has received a whopping 728% increase in allocation, while parliament has only seen a modest 8% increase.
This raises serious questions about the government’s priorities.
In conclusion, he noted that the government is claiming credit for a 33% increase in allocation to the School Feeding Program, when in fact, the previous administration had already achieved a 39% increase. Similarly, the government is touting a 30% increase in allocation to LEAP, when the previous administration had achieved a 100% increase in 2023 and an 85% increase in 2024.
