British actor Idris Akuna Elba has paid a courtesy call on Ga Mantse King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, at the Ga Traditional Council.
The actor was at the palace to seek the blessings and support of the respected traditional ruler for his visionary project to build a state-of-the-art film studio in Accra.
In his remarks, Idris Elba said he was excited to be before the Royal Highness.
He said his mother was born in Accra to a family of eleven brothers and sisters.
Idris Elba stated that he was before the king as a son of the soil and an ambassador for Africa, particularly Ghana and Sierra Leone.
He posited that the African stories are very important stories that must be told in their unique ways.
According to him, his duty is not just to see himself as a son of the soil but to cherish his traditions proudly and make sure he can represent his home when on film and in his private life.
”One of the goals that I have been trying to achieve in Africa is to bring my industry back to Africa. We have noticed that Nollywood and South Africa; these countries have done very well. We’ve seen Ghana do very well with film, but there is a level I would love to bring back and amplify in the strongest way that we can, and that is part of my duty.”
He stated that the purpose of the visit was to seek the traditional leader’s blessings before embarking on his vision to build a film studio, a school, and a community in Accra.
King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, in his response, welcomed the actor and assured him that the Ga State would support the film studio.
He said as someone who has been a practitioner, he values how important the creative arts industry was for national development.
He also underscored the need for practitioners to invest in content in the Ga language.
