A newborn baby was found dead in a bag dumped outside a church in west London on Tuesday.
The Metropolitan Police said officers were called to Talbot Road, in Notting Hill, when the baby’s body was discovered outside All Saints Church shortly after midday.
The London Ambulance Service also attended and the baby, found by a council refuse collector in a black Marks & Spencer bag, was declared dead at the scene, the force added.
The Met said the mother “may have very recently given birth” before the baby’s body was abandoned. Police have launched an investigation and are urgently appealing for her to come forward “for her own welfare”.
Officers remain in the area, and inquiries are ongoing to locate the baby’s mother. Scotland Yard said the baby’s gender and exact age had not yet been established.
‘Extremely sad and shocking matter’
On Wednesday morning, Supt Owen Renownden said: “As shocking and tragic as this is, my priority remains with the mother’s welfare and health.
“We are really worried about her well being. If you are the baby’s mother and you see this today, I want to appeal directly to you to come forward and receive help.”
Those who may have information about the incident or saw anything “unusual” were also encouraged to come forward.
On Tuesday, police officers were seen guarding a taped cordon blocking access to the church and a blue tent was set up at the scene.
