The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has asked management of schools in the country to allow students to practice their religious faith without hindrances.

The minister stated that students have the right to associate with any religious beliefs of their choice as enshrined in the constitution of Ghana.

He said, “Every Ghanaian child is entitled to the full benefit of the rights and freedoms guaranteed under the constitution, so are the child and school.”

He made the remarks in his address at the congregation of the Ambariyya Muslim sect to observe the 2025 Eid ul-Fitr prayers in Tamale on Monday, March 31.

His statement comes after the Ghana Muslim Students Association of Ghana voiced concerns over the decision by the Saint Roses Senior High School in Akwatia in the Eastern Region to deny Muslim students the opportunity to go home to observe the Eid-ul-Fitr despite a circular by the Ghana Education Service.

A statement issued by the Association said: “I want to announce as Ghana’s Minister of Education that every child and every Ghanaian is entitled to the full benefit of all the rights enshrined in the 1992 Constitution, and therefore no school has the right to deny any Ghanaian child the right to practice their faith.

“All schools must recognise and respect the right of every Ghanaian child to profess and practise their religion.”
