Government appointees who want to contest NDC branch elections must resign – Mahdi Gibril

May 1, 2026
Mahdi-Gibril

Mahdi Gibril, the Acting Director of Elections for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated that government officials or appointees wishing to contest the party’s internal elections must resign from their current positions.

He noted that even those seeking to contest at the branch level are required to step aside to focus on their electoral interests.

According to Gibril, the party established these strict eligibility and resignation requirements for members holding public office to preserve the party’s structure and ensure individuals remain focused on their specific roles as either party leaders or government appointees.

The directive affects several high-ranking officials, including ministers and deputy ministers of state, chief executive officers, managing directors and their deputies, as well as metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives.

He stated that the affected officials are required to resign by April 30, May 14, or June 7, 2026, depending on the specific level of the election they intend to contest.

Speaking on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he explained that these deadlines are strategically designed to align with the party’s internal electoral guidelines.

The NDC noted that this directive is based on approvals from its National Executive Committee and is intended to safeguard the fairness and integrity of the process.

The upcoming branch elections will be conducted across 40,647 branches within the party’s 276 constituencies.

Mr Gibril confirmed that nomination forms will be made available online starting May 2 and can be accessed either individually or in bulk via the party’s official platform.

Each form will cost GHS 20.00. Furthermore, members are required to be financially up to date, with all dues payable through approved channels, including a dedicated shortcode system and the party’s official website.

The branch elections are scheduled to take place between May 20 and June 30, 2026.
