MTN Ghana’s CEO, Stephen Blewett, has revealed how he was targeted by a mobile money scam during his first month of work.
According to him, he received a call from a fraudster attempting to deceive him.
He disclosed this on his first anniversary as CEO.
“In my first month here, I received a call from a fraudster. He claimed I had made a transfer and tried to manipulate me into believing it. I decided to keep him on the phone for about 15 minutes, hoping that by doing so, he wouldn’t scam someone else.
“Eventually, I told him I was the CEO of MTN, and he didn’t believe me. He got upset and hung up. But this experience serves as a reminder of how important it is to stay vigilant.”
He added that the telecommunication company will initiate measures that will help deal with fraud.
“We are constantly asking ourselves how we can improve. We are applying the same customer-first mentality to tackle these issues and are exploring better solutions for our users.”
Mr. Stephen Blewett was appointed the CEO of MTN Ghana effective from April 1, 2024.
Mr. Blewett took over from Mr. Selorm Adadevoh, who was elevated to the role of MTN Group Chief Commercial Officer (GCCO).
Mr. Blewett, a seasoned executive with nearly two decades of experience in the telecommunications industry, holds a degree in Commerce from the University of Kwazulu-Natal in South Africa.
His career has spanned senior positions in South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Benin, and with operators such as Telkom Mobile, MCell, MTC, and MTN.
During his five-year tenure as Chief Executive Officer of MTN Benin from 2015 to 2020, Mr. Blewett achieved significant milestones, overseeing double-digit growth in several segments despite challenging economic conditions.
His performance earned him accolades, including the Best Chief Executive Officer in Benin in 2019 across all sectors and the Best Chief Executive Officer of all MTN Group subsidiaries in 2020.
