Geoffrey Kabutey Ocansey, Executive Director for Revenue Mobilisation Africa, said the successful abolishment of the E-Levy and some other taxes will ensure tax compliance.
He said the government would enjoy some goodwill, and Ghanaians would be willing to pay their taxes without hesitation.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he posited that the scrapping of the E-Levy will ensure compliance. Ghanaians will be willing to pay their taxes because the government’s fulfilling its promise has excited Ghanaians and affects compliance.
He also argued that scraping the taxes would reduce the tax burdens of business owners.
President John Dramani Mahama has signed the bills repealing the e-levy, betting tax, and emissions levy on Wednesday, April 02, 2025.
Other bills assented to by the president are the Value Added Tax (VAT) Amendment Bill, Income Tax Amendment Bill 2025, Petroleum Revenue Management Amendment Bill 2025, Public Financial Management Amendment Bill, Earmarked Funds Capping and Realignment Bill, Energy Sector Levy Act, the Gold Board Bill 2025 and the Growth and Sustainability Levy Act.
Commenting on this, the tax expert advised the government to look at alternative means of generating revenue by cutting down on expenditure and exploring other avenues, including rent taxes, property rates and other levies.
He opined that authorities must expand the tax net to cover every Ghanaian, particularly those in the informal sector, since only 10% of them are paying taxes.
‘’We also have to deal with corruption. There is the need to put in measures to deal ruthlessly with people who misappropriate state resources by making them return every single pesewa they stole from the state.’’
