Boxing trainer Ofori Asare has described the death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju as something that must be thoroughly investigated to determine the true cause of death.
He stated that the death of the professional boxer was terrible, although it could be classified as an occupational hazard.
This, he noted, could affect anyone, but ‘’the most important process available now is for us to interrogate the matter and determine the cause of death. Establishing the true cause of death will determine our next line of action.
Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju tragically passed away after collapsing during a fight in Ghana.
The former Nigerian and West African light-heavyweight champion collapsed onto the ropes in the third round.
Mr Asare asserted that the video that went viral did not capture whether the boxer took a punch, and so it is crucial to determine what could have led to the incident.
He said boxers should learn lessons from this and take their medicals seriously, especially when preparing for a bout.
He told Rainbow Sports that a boxer dying in a ring is rare, and ’through the postmortem, we will be able to determine what killed the boxer. It should also serve as a lesson to boxers. The incident is a tragedy, but we can learn lessons from it”.
He also advised managers of the boxers to prioritise their health and ensure they have successfully gone through their medicals before fighting.
