The First Deputy Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Bernard Ahiafor, has been nominated as president of the Democracy and Human Rights Committee for the African Geopolitical Group of the Interparliamentary Union (IPU).
The Ghanaian lawmaker was nominated at the ongoing 150th Assembly of the IPU, taking place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from 5 to 9 April 2025.
This committee, as part of its mandate, examines current and developing challenges to democracy and human rights.
It also proposes parliamentary action on these at both national and international levels through the political resolutions it sets out once a year and which are adopted by the entire IPU membership.

It is one of our four permanent committees, which meet at our twice-yearly assemblies. All Member Parliaments are able to take an active role in putting forward items for the committee agenda, bringing their perspective to the debates and the draughting of resolutions.
The work of each committee is guided by an 18-member bureau with three representatives per geopolitical group –among the three, there must be at least one man and one woman.
The IPU facilitates parliamentary diplomacy and empowers parliaments and parliamentarians to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development around the world.
