Incumbent General Secretary Mr Michael Aggrey has confirmed his interest in the presidential position at the Ghana Olympic Committee.
The former banker and sports administrator says the leadership within the sports fraternity in Ghana is not united, and it was one of the major things he sought to address.
Speaking in an interview on Rainbow Sports, he stated that there was the need to build on the legacy of those who have come before him.
Michael Aggrey posited that unity was key in ensuring that Ghanaian sports make progress.
According to him, having positions in other associations will not prevent him from performing his duties if elected as GOC’s president, indicating that ’”multitasking is the least of my fears. The most important thing is to have a dedicated team who will support your vision.
He believes he is the only candidate with what it takes to take over from Ben Nunoo Mensah, who recently announced his decision not to seek another term.
‘’I have the experience. I have held several positions with different associations in the sports fraternity. I have a solid record, and so I think I have what it takes to manage the GOC.
He revealed that he consulted broadly with stakeholders who are familiar with the terrain, and from what he gathered, it was obvious that if he contests, he will win.
Michael Aggrey added that the reason why his announcement to contest was delayed was because he thought Ben Nunoo was going to seek reelection since they had planned to give him all the support, but he opted out.
‘’One of the reasons why my decision to contest was delayed was because we all thought Nunoo Mensah would seek reelection, so we would support him. He did so well and had a solid record. The plan was to support him for another term, but for one or two reasons, he will not run again. I respect his decision and believe I am capable of taking over from him. It’s unfortunate that he won’t be running again, but I believe I can carry on his legacy.”
