1,000 Medical Laboratory Scientists left Ghana to seek greener pastures in 2024 – GAMLS

GMALS

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists has revealed that 1,000 of their members left Ghana for other countries to seek better opportunities in 2024.

The Association said on a daily basis, professionally trained medical laboratory scientists are leaving the country to practise in other countries.

General Secretary Solomon told Rainbowradioonline.com that one of the good things about this is that these individuals come to the professional body to seek approval.

He disclosed that they receive forms every day to endorse individuals who want to travel abroad to work.

He attributed this to poor remuneration for practitioners and a lack of unemployment opportunities for the newly trained professionals.

‘’On a daily basis, our colleagues are leaving the country, and one of the good things is that they come to the professional body for some approval, and on a daily basis, we receive forms to fill out for people to leave the country. A lot of them have told us they are going to leave the country. It is because of the economic issues, the economic conditions. The salaries are not very motivating.

There are a lot of our colleagues who are also leaving because the government is not getting them employed in the sector. We can say that last year we had about 1,000 of our colleagues leaving the country,” he stated.

He stated that there are approximately 6,000 registered members, of which 1,000 left Ghana in 2024, and another 3,000 student members who are currently at home awaiting financial clearance to be employed.

Mr. Solomon Kwashie said the impact of those leaving is negative because there are some facilities that have to employ people on a casual basis due to the failure of the government to employ more.

‘’So if more are leaving, the burden is on a few people, and this will compromise the safety and quality of work,’’ he added.

He also added that we require seven medical laboratory scientists for every 1,000 people, and that if the government hires trained professionals from home, the number will increase.
