Aspiring President of the Ghana Olympic Committee Michael Aggrey has claimed that the quality of sportsmanship in Ghana has depreciated.
He voiced concerns that Ghana has in recent times underperformed across all disciplines, including boxing, athletics, and football.
Speaking on ‘Total Sports Review’ on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, he said Ghana was known to be a powerhouse of boxing, athletics and football, but our performances in recent times have not been the best.
He believes that the primary cause of this is the disunity among our sports industry’s leadership.
According to him, without unity from the sector, Ghana will lag behind.
He assured stakeholders that his core objective in contesting the race is to unite the leadership front of Ghana sports.
‘’Our failure in winning laurels on the world stage is not because we lack the skills and people, but the disunity among our leaders in the sports sector has created this challenge. That is why I have decided to contest and bring back unity in the leadership of sports because that is the only way we can get back to our winning ways.’’
He intends to implement a comprehensive youth development strategy in which he will train and support young people so that they can represent the country in competitions.
One challenge he identified was that, while we occasionally discover young talents, there are no available structures to train these individuals to become the professionals they deserve to be.
‘’We’ve always promoted the catch them young policy, but even when we have discovered the talent, we don’t help in training and monitoring their progress, and so I want to initiate a policy where we will identify the talent, train them, monitor their progress and provide them with the needed resources so they will move to the top.
We cannot identify talent and then ignore or refuse to provide them with financial, medical, and psychological growth, as well as physical wellbeing. It is critical to improve their conditions so that they can gain the necessary experience and transformation to represent the country. That is the other agenda I would like to pursue if elected president.”
