President of the Association of Private Medical Laboratories Ghana, Emmanuel Sarfo, has appealed to the government to put in place measures that will ensure a stable economy.
He said there was the need for private sector players to get access to funding or loans with low interest rates.
The professional laboratory scientist noted that this will make it much easier for them to pay back the loans, expand their activities and also employ more people.
He lamented that loans with high interest rates compress the private sector and delay expansion of the sector.
He said countries such as the United States of America have succeeded because of privatisation.
Mr. Emmanuel Sarfo was speaking to Rainbowradioonline.com on the sidelines of a public lecture organised by the Ghana Association of Biomedical Scientists to commemorate the annual International Federation of Biomedical Science Day (IFBLS) in Accra on April 15, 2025.
“Funding should be of interest to the government. If the private sector has access to low-interest loans and a stable economy, we will be able to repay our loans, expand our businesses, and create new jobs. However, high interest rates will compress us. The United States has successfully utilised privatisation. I believe we do not have to suffer if we focus on privatisation in our own country and make things comfortable.”
On the issue of professionals travelling abroad to seek greener pastures, he advised them to reconsider their decisions because there are numerous opportunities available in the country.
He also admonished authorities to empower the youth of Ghana so they will stay in the country and work.
”The amount required to pay a middleman is close to Ghc100,000, allowing the person to travel abroad. The same amount can be used to launch a business in Ghana. But I believe some of these people lack the courage to remain in Ghana and work. They prefer to work for others rather than risk starting their own business. I believe that courage must exist. I’d prefer to use the money I’ll pay the connection man to start a business in Ghana. To me, the youth should be encouraged to stay and work. Opportunities exist in both public and private sectors.”
