The Ghana Association of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has appealed to the government to approve the recruitment of young and professionally trained laboratory scientists.
General Secretary Dr Solomon Kwashie stated that one of the major challenges confronting them is the recruitment of young ones into the field of practice.
He lamented that a lot of young people have been trained and gained the needed expertise to work, but the government is not employing them.
The situation, he said, is bringing a lot of burdens on the few already working.
He has therefore appealed to authorities to open the portals to recruit the professionals who had finished school.
One of the things we want to tell the government is that, as a matter of urgency, the government should open the portals to recruit our professionals who have completed school since 2018 and are still at home. This has caused a lot of brain drain. A lot of them are leaving the country, which we think is not going to help in the sustainability of our health system.”
He was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Open Day Celebration organised by the Korle-Bu Central Lab to commemorate the World Laboratory Day, which serves as an opportunity to recognise the crucial role of laboratories in healthcare, scientific progress, and safety.
The Open Day also offered an opportunity for the facility to unveil its ISO accreditation, signifying its commitment to quality and competence in medical laboratory services.
Dr Kwashie indicated that they also have challenges with resources, stating that the procurement of modern technology is a challenge.
“We want the government to partner with us to see how our young ones can get into the manufacturing of some of these technologies in partnership with some international organisations so that we can have sustainable resources available for testing services in Ghana.”
