The Ghana Pharmaceutical Society has announced that it is prepared for President John Dramani Mahama’s much-anticipated 24-hour economy policy.
The Society indicated that they are totally prepared, and with the support from the government, they will deliver on the quality of drugs the country needs.
Executive Member of the Society, Dr Richmond Adusa Poku, stated that their members are well prepared because they have the capacity, technical knowledge and human resources to deliver but would need the support from the government.
Ghana, he noted, imports about 70% of the pharmaceutical products from other countries, with the remaining produced in Ghana, but assured the public that they are willing and prepared to close that gap with support from the government.
He revealed that during his first term, President John Dramani Mahama provided some form of support to the industry, increasing their capacity and exports to other countries, and that the implementation of the 24-hour economy will go a long way towards expanding their activities, creating jobs, and reducing imports.
”We are totally prepared. The factories are operational and ready to work morning, day, and night shifts. Ghana currently imports approximately 70% of its drugs, with the remainder produced locally. President Mahama supported the industry during his first term, which helped it expand and allowed some companies to export to Burkina Faso, Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, and other countries. So, if he can implement the 24-hour economy and provide financial support to pharmaceutical companies, it will be fantastic news because it will expand our business and help Ghana reduce its reliance on imports,” he said in an interview with Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM.
