The demonstration to be organised in protest against the suspension of the Chief Justice is premature – GUM

April 28, 2025
GUM

The Ghana Union Movement has disclosed that it is not part of the planned demonstration to be organised by some opposition political parties following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Speaking in an interview on Frontline 87.5FM, the party’s General Secretary, Anthony A. Gold Ahinful, disclosed that GUM was neither consulted nor part of any coalition organising the protest scheduled for May 5, 2025.

GUM, he explained, posited that the parties should allow the processes involved to be exhausted before any redress.

He said the communication director of the party was recently invited to a meeting where issues were discussed, but GUM never said it did not support the demonstration.

According to him, GUM had informed the other parties they had to engage the party leadership and decide on the way forward, but they went ahead to include them in the parties involved.

‘’ The demonstration is premature. The constitution has provided guidelines on how the Chief Justice is to be removed. The President is expected to seek advice from the Council of State, determine a prima facie, establish a committee to probe the matter, and then they submit their recommendations so the President will decide what to do.

The president has not broken any laws; he has followed the exact guidelines outlined in the constitution, so we must wait for the committee to complete its work, and if we discover that the allegations were frivolous but the president was determined to remove her, we can respond with a demonstration.

But the committee has not finished its work, and so the demonstration is premature. If we embark on the demonstration and it is established by the committee that the allegations were frivolous, what would be our position? Or should we embark on the demonstration, and if any of the international media interview us about the issue and what the president has done so far about the petitions, what would be our response?’’
