The Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations has launched an investigation into the cybersecurity breach that has affected customers of mobile telecommunication company MTN.

According to the ministry, the investigation will determine the extent of the breach and ensure that necessary measures are taken to protect customer data.

It also disclosed that it will ensure that all affected customers are contacted in line with data protection laws.

The statement added that the ministry is also working to establish if there were any other breaches on the part of the mobile network operator.

Meanwhile, it has asked customers and the general public to remain calm as the matter is being resolved.

Background

The MTN Group has admitted that approximately 5,700 MTN Ghana customers may have been affected by a recent security breach.

The company has assured customers that it was working with top cybersecurity experts and conducting a forensic investigation in accordance with established security protocols to evaluate the extent of the breach.

In a statement issued on Monday, April 28, MTN Group confirmed that all affected customers would be contacted directly.

“MTN assures its customers that the privacy of information is our top priority, and we remain committed to safeguarding the integrity of our systems and the trust placed in us by our customers and other stakeholders. We will continue to contain and manage this matter carefully,” the statement said.
