Governance expert Amon Kotei has opined that the launch of the Code of Conduct for public servants was a step in the right direction by President John Dramani Mahama.

He asserted the Code will serve as a guide for all appointees to maintain integrity, discipline and transparency.

The Code of Conduct for Public Servants is a good document. It will serve as a guide for all public servants to maintain the highest form of integrity, accountability and transparency. As a leader, you are required to ensure that your appointees distinguish themselves and abide by the highest form of integrity, and so, for the president to launch the Code of Conduct, it is a step in the right direction.

Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Amon Kotei said the other objective is to prevent an embarrassment to the government, corruption and indiscipline.

He went on to state that the president must be firm and bold to deal with appointees who will flout the Code of Conduct, including dismissal from office.

He said the president had already warned his appointees not to be arrogant and engage in corruption since that will amount to serious consequences.

Amon Kotei said if the President himself has served caution against these things, then it is clear that any appointee who misbehaves would be sacked from office.

Background

President John Dramani Mahama has launched a comprehensive Code of Conduct and Ethics for all political appointees, marking a significant step toward enhanced transparency, accountability, and ethical governance.

The unveiling fulfils a key promise made during the 2024 general election as part of the President’s 120-day Social Contract with the Ghanaian people.

The Code of Conduct applies to executive branch officials, including the President, Vice President, Ministers and Deputy Ministers, and Presidential Staffers.

Non-compliance will result in penalties, including forfeiture of salary and potential dismissal.

President Mahama emphasised the importance of asset declaration and strict compliance with the code to restore confidence in the political elite and consolidate democracy.
